Tens of thousands of Jews defied the forces arrayed against them in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II by smuggling Jewish children out of occupied France into Switzerland, ambushing a train destined for a death camp and freeing scores of Jews from the cattle cars, building an isolated and self-sufficient village for over a thousand ghetto survivors, setting off bombs and building escape tunnels - often while malnourished an injured.
