Honey and the valley of horses

Orr, Wendy

Notes
n the mountains there was a valley, and in the valley were the horses
When Honey was four and her brother Rumi a tiny baby, a terrible illness swept the world. Grumpa died and a fog of grief fell over the family, so they loaded up the converted ice-cream-van-camper and drove away from the sad wide world. High in the mountains, they crossed a bridge to follow a mysterious herd of horses into a sheltered valley. The bridge and the track disappeared behind them – and they were trapped in paradise.
NanNan teaches them to fish; they grow food and experiment with bush plants. The creek’s water is fresh and clear, and the van’s solar panels give them power so their phones work, but no messaged from the outside world are ever received and they come to believe that no one has been left alive.
Honey must be courageous, resilient, independent and resourceful as she leaves her family to venture out into the wide world to try to find help for her sick Papa. And, in the end, Honey and her horse will save the day, and her family will return to the world to find that they are healed, and so is the world and they will all be welcomed back into it - with ice cream.
